Blog

Today we debugged the methods of the board validation that weren't working and got them working. Then we converted all the validation functions to arrow functions and made sure all the board validation functions are working as intended in Postman before we move onto notes. Once we were satisfied, then we moved onto validating the post request for notes.

hello
0:00:26
welcome back everyone welcome back to
0:00:28
another episode of bill break and fix
0:00:31
um
0:00:32
to all those people are new here of
0:00:34
course we are recorders which means that
0:00:36
we're a team of two developers from
0:00:38
melbourne australia
0:00:40
and we're working on a project which
0:00:42
adds persistent storage
0:00:44
to a current open source project which
0:00:47
is called scrumbler.ca
0:00:50
um if you've been following us you know
0:00:52
what we do if you don't we are working
0:00:54
on stack which relates to
0:00:56
express.js um
0:00:58
we do a lot of fetch apis
0:01:01
we do a lot of stuff relating to um
0:01:04
agile methodology um especially scrum
0:01:07
we use text like
0:01:09
vs code github
0:01:11
you'll see us using postman as well
0:01:14
so yes um
0:01:16
and if you do know what we are doing
0:01:18
yesterday was we were trying to
0:01:22
make
0:01:23
environment variables on vs code work
0:01:27
which we think we were really really
0:01:30
close
0:01:31
but let's see how it unfolds today so
0:01:34
how are you feeling today then
0:01:36
brilliant um
0:01:38
thanks for the introduction and yeah you
0:01:42
pretty much
0:01:43
covered it all let's
0:01:45
dive in into a fun part which is
0:01:49
postman no that is good
0:01:52
first
0:01:59
[Music]
0:02:00
you're going to change your screen and
0:02:03
i'll try
0:02:05
fail and adjust until we get the
0:02:08
environment where it was working on my
0:02:11
hand without sharing the screen
0:02:13
yeah if you're not just your
0:02:17
camera you're welcome to now
0:02:19
um
0:02:20
get if i want to walk
0:02:23
if you're not just your camera if you're
0:02:24
not happy with it you're welcome to
0:02:25
adjust it
0:02:27
nobody likes camera
0:02:29

0:02:32
remember
0:02:34

0:02:37
it's fine though like i think it should
0:02:39
be fine for now
0:02:42
you can see how you're looking on my
0:02:44
screen
0:02:46
okay yeah that should be okay fun for
0:02:49

0:02:51

0:03:05
us a text which i just saw on slack oh
0:03:10
all right i haven't got mobile on slack
0:03:13
so i wouldn't really know
0:03:15
as in slack on mobile i'll just
0:03:18
log in and see what he's saying
0:03:24
on the mac
0:03:31
oh
0:03:32
um
0:03:35
he was asking if
0:03:37
if he is joining us today
0:03:41
but the internet still seems a bit
0:03:45
clunky
0:03:46
but he said that it's it's
0:03:50
i don't know
0:03:52
i think
0:03:53
it will work
0:03:55
but i guess it'll be too late now
0:03:58
yeah
0:04:00
we can reschedule him as in
0:04:03
another and at the time
0:04:06
please join soon
0:04:07
[Music]
0:04:09

0:04:24
just send tori and invite as in
0:04:28
the link and um we'll feel free he can
0:04:32
let me get a confirmation jump on
0:04:35
call
0:04:52
cool come back to
0:04:55
for him to come on board
0:05:00
as a special guest
0:05:02
that'll be fun
0:05:03
if you can make it
0:05:14
all right okay he's going to be able to
0:05:15
find us that's all good tori
0:05:20
okey-dokey come back to work then
0:05:23
yeah
0:05:24
that's fine
0:05:28
all right um you continue to do that and
0:05:31
i'm gonna continue to experiment on my
0:05:34
side until we succeed
0:05:42
so
0:05:43
uh
0:05:44
tori is saying
0:05:46
sorry the main provider finally states
0:05:49
it today there's a problem with
0:05:52
the
0:05:53
c cable
0:05:55
right right
0:05:57
i don't know that's fine
0:05:58
tory um
0:06:02
hope they can
0:06:04
get this sorted and um
0:06:08
we can
0:06:09
most probably um
0:06:14
reschedule your
0:06:16
guest appearance
0:06:18
hmm
0:06:32
yes
0:06:36
oh okay
0:06:43
no go away
0:06:57
is
0:07:03
[Music]
0:07:13
[Music]
0:07:20
that's all good touring
0:07:29
[Music]
0:07:33
if you want to set the
0:07:35
variables
0:07:38
it's quite embedded
0:07:41
how to use
0:07:51
and not
0:08:08
years
0:08:23
um
0:08:42
uh such an environment variable user
0:08:46
around towards the user object
0:08:52
jason pause
0:09:03
you need to use the one i think
0:09:12
[Music]
0:09:34
right let's see if this works
0:09:41
process
0:09:44
e and b
0:09:46
dot
0:09:49
this
0:09:50
url
0:09:55
all right
0:10:13
uh touristing well twitch
0:10:17
doesn't stream for me but youtube does
0:10:23
that's good
0:10:25
oh easy chef
0:10:28
thanks for reminding me get deaf i'll
0:10:30
just
0:10:31
get my hoodie because i promised
0:10:34
hmm
0:10:46
fun
0:11:34
all right so
0:11:38
i
0:11:39
don't want
0:11:41
this url
0:11:44
i think that is supposed to be it
0:11:52
functional url base url
0:11:57
and if i
0:12:00
do this
0:12:02
how do you go into the debug view then
0:12:05
debug me if you
0:12:07
click the
0:12:10
you're already on there
0:12:13
[Music]
0:12:17
are you wanting to debug it
0:12:21
um
0:12:22
okay i just want like
0:12:28
like
0:12:29
a
0:12:32
all right this is what i want yeah
0:12:39
oh
0:13:18
and
0:13:20
um
0:13:24
[Music]
0:13:46
now hmm
0:13:57
anyone i might put some music on
0:14:01
do you want to do that
0:14:03
you're welcome
0:14:05
huh
0:14:06
you're welcome to do it
0:14:36
hmm
0:14:54
you
0:14:55
able to hear it
0:15:02
or not
0:15:06
i think for that i i'll have to share my
0:15:09
screen but that's fine continue okay
0:15:11
i'll play music
0:15:25
i'll
0:15:26
sending you this url if it's easier for
0:15:30
you and it will save time
0:15:33
for what oh you got it
0:15:36
i've sent you the link to the
0:15:39
music
0:15:41
oh i already got it it's fine okay cool
0:15:43
oh if you want me to create something
0:15:45
specific i don't mind
0:15:48
my name is just um
0:15:51
music is
0:15:53
music music man don't worry about it
0:15:56
can you hear this
0:16:01
no
0:16:04
a little bit
0:16:14
yeah that should be fine but that's just
0:16:17
too loud
0:16:19
yeah that's what i was thinking because
0:16:21
it was the drop
0:16:22
ah okay
0:16:24
yeah that's fine
0:16:27
yeah
0:16:28
that's fine yeah cool
0:16:32
do you know how to make the
0:16:34
launch the json file
0:16:37
how to make it
0:16:39
hmm
0:16:40
i thought that was already there
0:16:43
as you can see
0:16:44
you told me remember
0:16:46
yeah for a particular project
0:16:49
oh for a particular project i think
0:16:51
there's um
0:16:53
something you
0:16:55
actually have to run a debug
0:16:57
and then it makes a file itself hang on
0:17:01
i remember how
0:17:03
i did it
0:17:04
and
0:17:05
let me check if it works
0:17:07
in that way
0:17:10
note chrome
0:17:13
okay
0:17:14
yeah if you go to the
0:17:16
debug
0:17:18
yeah i am
0:17:20
actually i'm gonna enlarge your screens
0:17:23
so i can see properly
0:17:25
um
0:17:26
yeah and then um do
0:17:29
run and debug
0:17:43
hey can you guys hear me
0:17:45
yes
0:17:50
can you guys hear me
0:17:51
yes can you yes we can all right wow i'm
0:17:54
on roar coders
0:17:56
yeah
0:17:57
brilliant
0:17:59
welcome tory reading
0:18:01
good times
0:18:04
definitely all downhill from here
0:18:11
now really good to have you uh that was
0:18:12
a little lovely surprise
0:18:15
thanks for having me yeah for sure all
0:18:17
of you guys um yep this is story
0:18:20
he was supposed to be our special guest
0:18:22
yesterday but
0:18:24
um
0:18:25
he chose to surprise us today which is a
0:18:26
way better yeah looking forward to this
0:18:29
yeah phenomenal
0:18:31
do you want to give us an introduction
0:18:32
to it
0:18:34
sure i'm tori um i'm actually currently
0:18:37
in bali um and it looks like we're
0:18:39
having some
0:18:41
problems with our with our c cable like
0:18:44
here in indonesia
0:18:47
yeah so it's pretty interesting
0:18:49
yeah i guess i guess it's i guess the
0:18:53
uh the c cable goes from bali to java
0:18:58
and then from java i don't know where it
0:19:00
goes but
0:19:01
i guess the problem's there because
0:19:03
in jakarta there's there's uh
0:19:06
uh there's the aws data center i think
0:19:09
google hq and facebook and
0:19:14
and they also put a lot of money into
0:19:16
those c cables and i heard they're like
0:19:19
they're also like um going to be
0:19:22
putting in more investment here in
0:19:24
indonesia putting down more sea cable so
0:19:26
i wonder if has something to do with
0:19:28
construction potentially
0:19:31
yeah it could be
0:19:32
no that
0:19:33
might be
0:19:35
but
0:19:36
yeah i guess let's see that apart
0:19:39
but
0:19:40
yes i think
0:19:42
um
0:19:43
it's a good time because you were the
0:19:44
one who started this whole environment
0:19:46
variable
0:19:47
initiative yeah
0:19:50
as soon as we started doing it he's like
0:19:52
oh tori popped in
0:19:55
perfect timing
0:19:56
cool
0:19:59
okay yeah so i was just being curious as
0:20:01
in you're talking about the sea cable i
0:20:04
haven't i don't know i'm i might be
0:20:07
from the stone age but i haven't really
0:20:09
heard as in
0:20:11
what is a sea cable though as in
0:20:15
does it go under the sea
0:20:19
honestly i've never seen one myself i've
0:20:21
only heard about it but i i think it's
0:20:24
actually laid on the sea floor but i
0:20:26
could be totally wrong about that right
0:20:30
that's pretty fascinating stuff though
0:20:33
yeah as far as far as i understand
0:20:36
actually like most
0:20:38
i could be again i could be totally
0:20:40
wrong about this but i think i i've read
0:20:42
once that like most of the
0:20:45
most of the world is wired up that way
0:20:47
through
0:20:48
from these um
0:20:50
floor c cables
0:20:53
so i wonder i wonder in australia too
0:20:55
where you guys are i don't know where it
0:20:57
goes and comes from
0:20:59
yeah me neither one is just one cable
0:21:03
handling the whole
0:21:04
island internet
0:21:08
cable messes up the strength and it's
0:21:10
going on
0:21:11
australia
0:21:12
yeah yeah true
0:21:15
so tori what's life in bali as in gek
0:21:19
dev
0:21:20
asks
0:21:21
at the moment
0:21:25
uh
0:21:26
life valley
0:21:28
like what type of questions do we got
0:21:31
what's life for molly like what the
0:21:33
daily life like what do you do every day
0:21:35
is it different
0:21:36
for like is it any is it any different i
0:21:39
stare at my computer screen like most of
0:21:42
the day like you guys i'm sure
0:21:44
and then and then if i turn to the right
0:21:47
i got a nice rice field over here and
0:21:49
stuff so that's that's a little bit
0:21:51
different i guess the other aspect too
0:21:54
is
0:21:54
i mean like if you notice i'm actually
0:21:56
working outside
0:21:58
and so my my office is outside i just
0:22:02
have a roof
0:22:03
um
0:22:05
but i love it because the weather is
0:22:08
pretty much perfect every day
0:22:10
yeah um like i'm not i'm not even
0:22:13
wearing pants right now no underwear
0:22:15
[Laughter]
0:22:21
and and and so yeah like for me it's
0:22:24
great because i can be like really
0:22:26
productive and at the same time the
0:22:28
environment's just so relaxing too um
0:22:32
but like originally i'm from
0:22:35
i'm from i'm from near boston in
0:22:37
massachusetts you know um which would be
0:22:40
much more like melbourne and so
0:22:43
yeah
0:22:44
except our winters are far worse
0:22:50
true so what made you as in go to bali
0:22:55
though as in from the us
0:22:57
um i started coming to bali like five
0:23:00
years ago and actually i was planning on
0:23:04
going to australia and when i got this
0:23:07
ticket um it was actually
0:23:10
uh a little bit more convenient and
0:23:12
cheaper to fly to bali first and i had
0:23:15
never been
0:23:16
and so i i stopped and i had like couple
0:23:19
days here and then i just canceled my
0:23:22
onwards
0:23:23
[Laughter]
0:23:23
[Music]
0:23:26
so yeah the first time i came here i
0:23:28
stayed here like two months and then i
0:23:31
and then i went on to
0:23:33
um
0:23:34
melbourne eventually and i stayed there
0:23:36
for like a week
0:23:37
and that's right
0:23:39
you didn't like it here
0:23:41
i mean
0:23:43
you know what i i didn't even get a
0:23:45
chance to experience it because when i
0:23:47
got there i got a flu like right away so
0:23:49
i was in my head for like
0:23:51
four days but i stayed in i think i
0:23:54
stayed in footscray
0:23:56
oh right yeah
0:23:58
yeah very nice that's pretty nice
0:24:01
but yeah
0:24:03
that's pretty good that just you're
0:24:04
coming to melbourne and you just
0:24:06
[Laughter]
0:24:09
[Music]
0:24:14
life as in overall things in bali are
0:24:17
pretty cheap
0:24:18
and all the kind of entrepreneurs they
0:24:21
actually
0:24:23
i mean i've heard this phrase that if
0:24:25
you want to actually become an
0:24:27
entrepreneur you should start from that
0:24:30
place
0:24:32
yeah i mean
0:24:34
um well i i can't speak to any success
0:24:37
in doing that but
0:24:39
i would say there's there's definitely a
0:24:41
community that
0:24:43
that is involved in doing
0:24:46
startups
0:24:48
and they do have some
0:24:50
i guess relatively
0:24:52
maybe
0:24:53
i don't know if you want to call them
0:24:54
famous
0:24:55
co-working spaces but they do have they
0:24:58
do have some pretty
0:25:00
um active co-working spaces right now
0:25:03
everything's like really quiet so like
0:25:06
dec day of asks about tourism yeah like
0:25:09
there's nobody here
0:25:11
um pretty much
0:25:12
right
0:25:13
[Music]
0:25:20
hmm
0:25:21
i don't know if there's a rework there
0:25:25
i don't i don't think so but maybe there
0:25:27
might be and then actually indonesia has
0:25:29
its own like um chain
0:25:32
of co-working called go work which i
0:25:35
know they have an office here
0:25:37
um so that's that's kind of like there
0:25:39
we work
0:25:40
most of it is in jakarta you know the
0:25:42
main city but yeah um
0:25:46
but yeah there there's there's a lot of
0:25:47
cool stuff going on and in my past here
0:25:50
like these days i don't really meet a
0:25:51
lot of people you know because of covet
0:25:53
and everything yeah but like in my
0:25:55
travels here my time spent here i've
0:25:57
i've met like i remember i even met an
0:25:59
engineer from facebook
0:26:02
he was here on vacation
0:26:04
um i've met other other developers in
0:26:06
the past yeah it's pretty cool
0:26:08
very nice and how many days a week do
0:26:11
you spend on the beaches
0:26:13
oh actually i i i don't well i used to
0:26:17
live near the beach
0:26:19
um but now i live like more in in the
0:26:22
center
0:26:23
where it's more like rice fields and
0:26:24
stuff i moved here like a year ago but
0:26:27
yeah like i used to spend a lot of time
0:26:30
at the beach it's nice
0:26:31
very nice
0:26:33
that's pretty cool
0:26:35
no that's actually important stuff
0:26:37
though yeah come here
0:26:39
start your um failed startup it'll be a
0:26:42
great experience
0:26:44
i mean you're successful startup
0:26:50
i
0:26:51
i like the way you put that in the first
0:26:54
place
0:26:56
start your favorite stuff and you will
0:26:58
be a great man
0:27:01
hey yeah well i mean the title of the
0:27:03
show you know like it's all in there
0:27:05
right you don't you don't get it right
0:27:07
the first time elon didn't get it right
0:27:09
the first time
0:27:11
i'm sure exactly it's all as in part of
0:27:15
the journey
0:27:17
you try you fail you adjust trial fail
0:27:20
adjust yeah for sure
0:27:23
cool um
0:27:25
right do you guys wanna
0:27:27
get back to
0:27:29
um
0:27:30
just um
0:27:31
one
0:27:32
one more questions for tori then get dev
0:27:35
asked
0:27:36
what languages do you code in
0:27:39
i i code in in javascript i'm
0:27:44
pretty much like pure javascript guy um
0:27:49
i've i've learned like a tiny amount of
0:27:52
python and java but
0:27:55
like i do i do like 100 of my work in
0:27:58
javascript because i can just do front
0:28:01
end backhand
0:28:02
yeah
0:28:03
very nice
0:28:05
that's pretty good and i like it you can
0:28:07
do whatever you want you know
0:28:09
it has
0:28:10
it has very few
0:28:12
few rules to follow unlike other
0:28:14
languages i like dotnet for sure that's
0:28:18
true i think you're the first person
0:28:20
i've talked to that said that
0:28:23
okay
0:28:27
don't worry okay
0:28:34
[Music]
0:28:39
so
0:28:40
shall we
0:28:41
get back to
0:28:43
more fun
0:28:44
yeah for sure
0:28:46
so while we do work tori do you want to
0:28:48
talk about your career switch yeah
0:28:52
sure um
0:28:54
so
0:28:56
yeah like i used to be
0:28:59
a small business owner and um i do some
0:29:03
uh consulting with that as well but i
0:29:05
used to
0:29:06
i used to be a small business owner um
0:29:09
prior to
0:29:10
um being a developer
0:29:13
and
0:29:14
and um in that it
0:29:17
it was um
0:29:20
a lot of it was focused on e-commerce um
0:29:23
so that so that was
0:29:25
that was that was like i i had been
0:29:27
doing that for 10 years and like
0:29:30
obviously like
0:29:34
uh yeah sure i mean um
0:29:37
i i'm always like a more like technical
0:29:40
type of person an operational type of
0:29:43
person like
0:29:44
um
0:29:47
like i
0:29:48
yeah and and so like doing that
0:29:52
gave me a lot of like
0:29:54
bits and doses of exposure to to coding
0:29:58
and programming um and there were just
0:30:00
like so many problems um in the business
0:30:04
um you know
0:30:06
around those things so sometimes like i
0:30:09
would attempt things myself
0:30:11
um if i could
0:30:12
and and it was yeah and just um
0:30:17
and so
0:30:18
like i think the first time i programmed
0:30:21
like
0:30:22
when i'm a kid is like maybe a ti
0:30:25
calculator
0:30:31
maybe maybe
0:30:33
ti
0:30:34
texas instrument like graphing
0:30:35
calculator do you guys have those right
0:30:39
i don't know about them no
0:30:41
okay so
0:30:43
in the us like it was so common uh to
0:30:46
use for high school um
0:30:50
so it's like these are really bad
0:30:52
graphing calculators um but they were
0:30:55
programmable so like i remember we had
0:30:58
games on those is it something like this
0:31:01
yeah something a little bit a little bit
0:31:04
bigger and bulkier oh
0:31:06
right that looks like a casio
0:31:10
yeah it is a classic yeah i don't know
0:31:13
why i know that
0:31:14
[Laughter]
0:31:21
i was thinking like oh that's that's a
0:31:23
terrible casio you have there
0:31:26
yeah
0:31:28
i just really
0:31:29
can't build up that one isn't
0:31:33
but yeah like on those graphing
0:31:36
calculators people would people would
0:31:37
write these programs i don't ask me the
0:31:40
language i have no idea
0:31:42
um
0:31:43
but yeah like like and then kids somehow
0:31:47
like this is like almost pre-internet
0:31:49
too or like you know
0:31:51
like yeah pre-56k
0:31:54
modems and
0:31:56
and somehow we would get we would get
0:31:57
games on there and then we would just
0:32:00
like mod we would mod them like go and
0:32:02
like go into a game and mod
0:32:04
so like
0:32:07
that was like really the first time i
0:32:09
probably could say i i really wrote some
0:32:11
code and then of course like i don't
0:32:13
know
0:32:14
i don't know
0:32:15
if it's it's probably before you guys
0:32:18
but like back in the day we had things
0:32:20
like geocities
0:32:23
[Music]
0:32:29
but i'm
0:32:31
just really curious as in
0:32:35
we know that
0:32:37
you have actually transitioned from as
0:32:40
an e-commerce just software development
0:32:43
why software development
0:32:46
oh well you know like um
0:32:49
during the pandemic i i had to
0:32:52
i had to shut down my business like for
0:32:56
i don't know why it's so dark suddenly
0:33:00
that's weird
0:33:02
um
0:33:02
i had to shut down my business and then
0:33:05
um
0:33:08
and then uh there we go and then um
0:33:11
uh
0:33:13
like basically this the state made us
0:33:15
shut down for like i think three or four
0:33:18
months
0:33:19
and so i was i was already like
0:33:22
um
0:33:23
on the edge of wondering like how long
0:33:26
we would we could hold on when like cove
0:33:28
had first hit because we all knew like
0:33:30
the shutdown was gonna come
0:33:32
and
0:33:33
and so then my my business partner left
0:33:36
like four months into it
0:33:39
um just because we
0:33:40
we just had we thought it was gonna be
0:33:42
years
0:33:44
yeah
0:33:46
and so like i held on to the business
0:33:49
for like a
0:33:50
few more months after that and then i
0:33:52
just threw in the towel and i'm like you
0:33:54
know what like i'm just going to go do
0:33:55
that thing i always want to do which is
0:33:57
just go learn software development right
0:34:00
right
0:34:02
very nice
0:34:03
yeah so
0:34:04
pretty cool story though um did you
0:34:07
wanna
0:34:08
ask something okay
0:34:10
no go ahead on this
0:34:12
okay cool um gekko's asking what's your
0:34:16
favorite movie tori
0:34:18
my favorite movie wow that's a good
0:34:21
question
0:34:22
um
0:34:25
jeez
0:34:27
i i you know like i'm not
0:34:29
i'm not a person who has favorites
0:34:32
like i'm sorry i can't you're living
0:34:35
by choice
0:34:36
[Laughter]
0:34:44
so you pretty much
0:34:46
go by your mood then is it
0:34:50
for for movies
0:34:51
yeah
0:34:52
oh man well you know i'm like
0:34:55
i'm kind of picky honestly when it comes
0:34:58
to movies
0:34:59
right
0:35:02
what what's that i'm having some input
0:35:04
over here
0:35:06
no okay
0:35:09
not no not star wars sorry
0:35:12
that's your favorite movie
0:35:18
um but uh
0:35:20
like what's what's the last what's the
0:35:22
last cool movie we watched
0:35:28
fast and the furious nine
0:35:31
yeah i haven't watched it
0:35:33
i think right now we're watching suicide
0:35:36
squad
0:35:37
oh the second one
0:35:39
right have you guys seen it
0:35:41
nothing i think i've seen the first one
0:35:44
but not the second one yet
0:35:48
how is it though
0:35:51
it's pretty funny actually yeah like
0:35:54
it's pretty good like it's it's like
0:35:56
it's not super serious you know
0:35:59
okay okay yeah
0:36:01
cool
0:36:02
that's that's that that makes sense
0:36:04
though i think in
0:36:06
movies you're supposed to have a bit of
0:36:08
love they shouldn't be too serious or
0:36:12
too funny just right in
0:36:14
in the in the middle isn't it yeah are
0:36:16
you just are you describing this show
0:36:19
[Laughter]
0:36:31
[Laughter]
0:36:39
what would you have said then
0:36:42
i don't know i wouldn't have taken it
0:36:45
to be honest i didn't
0:36:48
understand it in the first place so
0:36:51
i was kind of lost the words
0:36:56
speaking but
0:36:58
having fun
0:37:00
i don't know
0:37:02
yeah
0:37:03
uh gekko saying my favorite movie is
0:37:05
harry potter
0:37:07
jack i love voldemort he's my favorite
0:37:13
[Laughter]
0:37:18
you watch harry potter
0:37:22
we go
0:37:23
there we go again
0:37:28
right so
0:37:29
okay do you wanna um
0:37:32
tell us where we are at the moment for
0:37:34
these a environment variables
0:37:37
so we can actually choose this stream a
0:37:41
bit more productively for the story so
0:37:44
we can actually
0:37:47
learn something
0:37:49
and not just
0:37:51
um
0:37:51
yeah yes no for sure um
0:37:55
i think i'm something
0:37:57
along the lines
0:37:59
i'll send you guys this link
0:38:01
on
0:38:06
so you'll have a private chat option
0:38:08
on the side in the right panel
0:38:11
see the link there that's exclusive
0:38:15
cool
0:38:18
the regular folks in the chat you guys
0:38:20
don't get that
0:38:21
no
0:38:24
you gotta you gotta get on this show
0:38:26
on the show to get that option
0:38:29
exclusive to the show yeah but tori do
0:38:33
you have any ideas for the environment
0:38:34
variable because i think
0:38:37
it'll be great if it comes from you
0:38:40
i know you did some research and you
0:38:42
sent me some links i think i have
0:38:44
them as well
0:38:47
let's see what do we
0:38:49
so
0:38:52
we're trying to do
0:38:53
um
0:38:55
so what we're trying to do is that
0:38:57
you know how in the middleware you know
0:39:00
pretty much how our app works right
0:39:03
kind of
0:39:04
um we have a back end and we have a
0:39:06
middleware
0:39:07
which works the middleware works on
0:39:09
fetch
0:39:12
yes um
0:39:14
that being said
0:39:16
so the way it works is that the person
0:39:18
who was spamming us gets the url from
0:39:20
the middleware
0:39:22
so
0:39:23
what we're trying to do is
0:39:27
instead of saying the url we'll just
0:39:29
write the environment variable
0:39:35
okay
0:39:36
yeah that's that's something
0:39:39
and so are you trying to
0:39:41
are you trying to put that in your yaml
0:39:44
um
0:39:46
not really uh we're trying to put in our
0:39:48
door to escort file which is gonna be
0:39:50
get ignored
0:39:51
so that we don't actually push anything
0:39:53
of that sword up
0:39:55
okay
0:39:56
yeah
0:40:00
okay so you guys are working on it so
0:40:03
hmm
0:40:06
dot emv well i i was actually doing this
0:40:10
this is a different way because i was um
0:40:14
i was i was working on the environment
0:40:16
variables with the
0:40:19
the sam or whatever cloud formation
0:40:21
template
0:40:25
[Laughter]
0:40:36
why are you laughing ben brought this up
0:40:39
yesterday as well
0:40:41
and i just i know i get it
0:40:48
sam was like it belongs in the bin
0:41:00
like the back end just doesn't need the
0:41:01
url
0:41:02
you know what i mean
0:41:08
so
0:41:10
i guess what what k is
0:41:12
trying to probably say is that
0:41:15
we don't need the uh how to do it in the
0:41:19
back end because that's
0:41:20
not where
0:41:22
our
0:41:23
api endpoint is shown
0:41:27
our
0:41:28
api endpoint is actually shown in the
0:41:31
middleware which is
0:41:34
in the front end
0:41:36
micro service so if you see
0:41:39
there on line
0:41:41
two it
0:41:42
shows that
0:41:44
api endpoint
0:41:46
so we are trying to figure out as in how
0:41:50
to
0:41:51
um
0:41:52
reference
0:41:54
this from our launch door settings.json
0:42:00
and i think i almost have it um i'll
0:42:02
show you what am i doing
0:42:05
and let's see if it works
0:42:09
okay
0:42:11
this guy you're interesting then i'm
0:42:14
gonna learn something yes for sure
0:42:17
so
0:42:18
i'll explain to you guys the way it
0:42:20
works is that
0:42:21
every time you do something in vs code
0:42:24
um there's a hidden file called dot vs
0:42:26
code which you probably add in your dot
0:42:28
get ignore as well and that file has
0:42:32
launched configurations and settings
0:42:33
configuration which are
0:42:35
only relative to your machine so that's
0:42:38
why you just don't push it to get up
0:42:40
um that being said so the way it's going
0:42:43
to work is that we're going to define an
0:42:45
env variable
0:42:47
in which
0:42:48
oh wait is it too small
0:42:50
no i think it's all right for me i don't
0:42:52
know about tori
0:42:54
um is it all actually
0:42:56
yeah yeah yeah i was actually reading
0:42:58
the article too oh sorry yeah um yeah i
0:43:00
sent you guys the article as well
0:43:03
oh come on boy let's work
0:43:06
oh there you go
0:43:07
one second
0:43:15
yeah ad blockers can be interesting
0:43:18
[Music]
0:43:21
okay
0:43:23
yes so the way it's gonna work is that
0:43:27
it'd be actually url here
0:43:29
and as it's gonna be in our get ignore
0:43:32
file it's never gonna get pushed up so
0:43:35
um no one's gonna get to see our url
0:43:37
ever
0:43:41
so i guess
0:43:43
the stage we are at at the moment is we
0:43:46
are just
0:43:47
trying to figure out how to because
0:43:49
they've already defined the environment
0:43:51
variable in launch short jason
0:43:54
we are trying to figure out how to
0:43:56
reference that in our middleweight.js
0:44:00
yep
0:44:02
gotcha
0:44:04
well this looks like
0:44:09
french is
0:44:10
this is using gulp
0:44:13
yeah um
0:44:14
yeah
0:44:16
down it is um oh down
0:44:18
okay
0:44:22
huh i didn't even know you could do this
0:44:25
from the launch file
0:44:27
oh yeah even i didn't know until i
0:44:29
opened it
0:44:31
they're just
0:44:33
learning at the same time while doing it
0:44:41
okay i'll try to give it a go now
0:44:44
um
0:44:46
what do you want i don't know how are
0:44:48
you referencing it
0:44:50
i'll show you once okay
0:44:54
wow
0:44:55
this guy is doing it so
0:44:58
um
0:45:03
okay
0:45:04
says break build sleep
0:45:06
[Laughter]
0:45:14
that's hilarious
0:45:18
but yeah i mean that's the problem with
0:45:20
live coding though isn't it
0:45:22
um
0:45:23
yeah
0:45:28
but i mean you you guys you guys
0:45:30
definitely do a good job keeping it
0:45:31
interesting with the live coding
0:45:34
thank you well
0:45:36
thank you tori i really appreciate it
0:45:40
and now you have actually added a bit
0:45:42
more flair to it
0:45:49
i like the chat the chat is pretty rowdy
0:45:51
i don't think you guys are paying
0:45:53
attention
0:45:54
no it is
0:45:55
most of the time they're pretty
0:45:58
yeah it just gets filed
0:46:04
especially when i talk about some
0:46:06
particular topics and i'm not gonna
0:46:10
be specific here
0:46:13
let's talk about some energy drinks then
0:46:18
the healthier ones
0:46:20
yeah can i can i get those i wonder if i
0:46:23
can get those here i really want to give
0:46:24
it a try now
0:46:28
not really i just want to let you guys
0:46:31
know i'm drinking
0:46:32
well let's say no i'm giving it a shot
0:46:38
um
0:46:40
support
0:46:51
uh i'd like to let you
0:46:54
know
0:46:55
because i don't really know at the
0:46:56
moment if they'd do it there
0:46:59
let you know
0:47:00
what what
0:47:02
what's your favorite healthy drink
0:47:05
energy drink tory
0:47:07
jacob was asking
0:47:10
definitely coffee
0:47:12
oh i i don't i don't know if i can say
0:47:14
that on this channel though
0:47:17
no you can you're on
0:47:19
[Laughter]
0:47:24
i i love your
0:47:26
sense of humor to be honest
0:47:36
okay let's see how this works
0:47:42
very interesting why is it not loading
0:47:43
up
0:47:45
nothing much that you need
0:47:52
um i think you would probably
0:47:56
um
0:47:59
which base url are you using at the
0:48:01
moment in um
0:48:03
thing
0:48:08
in your launch file which base
0:48:10
url
0:48:12
i'm just trying to print the base url
0:48:14
for now
0:48:16
okay cool right right yeah it has
0:48:18
decided not to work today
0:48:20
like the whole middleware isn't working
0:48:22
am i oh i know why
0:48:26
no one saw that
0:48:28
it's always interesting when case
0:48:31
says i know why and then it raises all
0:48:34
the
0:48:36
mysteriousness of the solution
0:48:40
yeah come on god i wasn't i wasn't
0:48:43
inside the climb that's the reason why
0:48:45
it wasn't working
0:48:50
okay so i did alert um processor envbs
0:48:54
url
0:48:55
which should go inside this thing and
0:48:57
yeah development or i just say i am a
0:49:00
url now
0:49:04
okay
0:49:05
see
0:49:07
there we go
0:49:09
and
0:49:12
um
0:49:13
very nice alert
0:49:16
oh wow okay
0:49:19
that is small
0:49:22
that's tiny
0:49:28
what does he say
0:49:31
it's not alerting with anything
0:49:34
no i meant the
0:49:36
arrow what does that say because we
0:49:39
can't see the
0:49:40
yeah one sec um it says ungod
0:49:43
i'll show you
0:49:48
process is not defined okay boys
0:49:53
so is there is there any particular
0:49:55
reason why you want to do it through
0:49:57
this launch jason
0:50:00
um
0:50:04
i guess the only reason is that we don't
0:50:05
want to push this
0:50:07
thing on the url on github and this is
0:50:12
one thing which actually doesn't get
0:50:13
pushed to github
0:50:14
why don't you just
0:50:16
why don't you just use an environment
0:50:20
file
0:50:22
well you mean oh yeah yeah we can use an
0:50:24
emp file yeah
0:50:26
um
0:50:27
yeah it's just that it would have been
0:50:29
integrated with um vs code do you know
0:50:31
how to do an env file
0:50:36
um
0:50:38
let's
0:50:40
usually
0:50:42
what's what's the what's the front end
0:50:45
um
0:50:46
um mostly react is it mostly react yeah
0:50:49
then you just throw um
0:50:52
um
0:50:53
react secret i think react underscore
0:50:56
secret
0:50:58
oh yeah
0:51:00
as the key
0:51:02
i just want to confirm at the moment can
0:51:04
you guys hear me
0:51:05
i can okay um i just
0:51:09
want to confirm at the moment that the
0:51:11
front end is in react at the moment
0:51:15
it's
0:51:16
purely
0:51:18
yeah it's
0:51:19
not
0:51:20
actually pure react at the moment is
0:51:23
html css javascript
0:51:26
but we are actually
0:51:28
when we are done with the mvc we will be
0:51:31
going back to the front end and
0:51:33
converting it into react so
0:51:36
react is the goal but at the moment it's
0:51:39
in
0:51:40
vanilla javascript
0:51:42
and ljs okay
0:51:45
then i think you
0:51:47
you just yeah just like
0:51:50
you know i'm pretty sure you just throw
0:51:52
it in like a node.js
0:51:54
hmm
0:51:56
yeah that's what i'm trying to do now
0:51:59
um this one
0:52:01
in
0:52:01
react you actually have to type i think
0:52:04
react underscore secret and then the
0:52:06
name the name of the
0:52:09
the key
0:52:13
oh
0:52:15
sorry about that gekko i actually meant
0:52:18
mvp not mvc
0:52:22
nets
0:52:23
things
0:52:24
they are still
0:52:26
stuck into my subconscious mind as in
0:52:29
the design pattern
0:52:33
model view control and all that
0:52:36
amazing stuff
0:52:38
okay
0:52:39
um
0:52:42
interesting
0:52:45
you know what i'm
0:52:46
thinking um
0:52:49
and we left the validations in the
0:52:51
middle to do this
0:52:53
should we go back and complete
0:52:54
validations or should we sort this
0:52:58
out i guess we should
0:53:01
stick to this because at the moment is
0:53:03
fresh
0:53:04
in our
0:53:05
in our mind
0:53:08
and yeah
0:53:09
and i think we are as in nearly there is
0:53:13
just a matter of finding how to
0:53:15
reference
0:53:17
those
0:53:18
base url into middleweight
0:53:22
yes
0:53:23
did you get something then like with
0:53:25
this
0:53:26
um i'm trying to
0:53:29
find out exactly
0:53:31
what you are as well but i'm not having
0:53:34
any
0:53:35
joy until now
0:53:37
and and zayn are you also worried about
0:53:40
your aws pill
0:53:44
anymore no anymore
0:53:49
i know i'm about to go bankrupt soon
0:53:54
that's that's why we're going to spin up
0:53:55
a bunch of alexa apps
0:53:58
yeah yeah
0:54:00
just like calculator one calculator
0:54:05
objective's asking what's the point of
0:54:07
putting the url
0:54:09
in an
0:54:11
env variable
0:54:13
do you want to explain that then
0:54:15
or two yeah for sure um so
0:54:19
the point is that we don't
0:54:22
wanna disclose the url
0:54:25
so if we put the actual url in the
0:54:29
launch.json file then it would be only
0:54:33
in our
0:54:34
machine and we won't be
0:54:37
committing it to github and um
0:54:40
in the middleware.js
0:54:42
it would
0:54:44
just be referencing that
0:54:46
environment variable in order to call
0:54:49
the url if that makes sense
0:54:52
yeah
0:54:54
the url isn't meant to be a secret
0:54:59
um is like we're gonna configure course
0:55:02
for sure right like but that's something
0:55:04
which is ahead um like two weeks ahead
0:55:08
yeah so for now we just wanna
0:55:10
uh
0:55:12
yeah i mean we can do appropriate
0:55:14
limiting yes for sure
0:55:17
um
0:55:18
but for now
0:55:19
also because we are streaming and the
0:55:21
url is open
0:55:23
um
0:55:24
i thought
0:55:25
it would be a better idea just not show
0:55:27
the url at all
0:55:31
there's there's clearly some bad actors
0:55:34
in the chat
0:55:36
um
0:55:36
[Laughter]
0:55:44
okay
0:55:56
you can also do that you get 25 read and
0:55:59
write free forever
0:56:08
as soon as the word free comes
0:56:11
tori's
0:56:12
air stand off
0:56:16
okay um
0:56:20
so
0:56:21
okay i'm
0:56:22
just thinking do we want to do that
0:56:24
instead
0:56:26
um
0:56:31
i mean
0:56:32
it won't it won't cost us
0:56:35
um it's free so why not
0:56:38
just to be sure
0:56:40
uh what do you mean by
0:56:42
pre-progressing like
0:56:45
like for me what i've learned
0:56:47
provision would mean that
0:56:49
just the maximum capacity
0:56:52
like the application cannot like can you
0:56:55
explain that to me
0:56:59
to be honest
0:57:02
with you um
0:57:03
i don't know the actual definition but
0:57:07
i am thinking that that would be the
0:57:11
definition based on common sense as in
0:57:15
pre
0:57:16
configure how many records we can
0:57:18
actually have
0:57:20
in that
0:57:21
in that
0:57:22
in that
0:57:24
table
0:57:25
mri get dev
0:57:28
provision free tier
0:57:30
aws provides a free tier with the
0:57:32
following resources include 25
0:57:35
read and write provision capacity units
0:57:37
25 gigs of data storage okay
0:57:41
okay so
0:57:42
is that dynamo
0:57:44
yes
0:57:48
okay interesting um let me check how
0:57:52
um
0:57:53
that can be done always
0:57:55
85 already
0:57:59
time
0:58:00
literally flies
0:58:02
[Music]
0:58:04
do you wanna join us tomorrow tori as
0:58:06
well
0:58:08
for sure why not
0:58:10
what is it sounds like fun
0:58:12
yeah for sure
0:58:13
okay yeah i i guess like if we are not
0:58:16
able to do it today we're gonna probably
0:58:20
um jump on and do
0:58:23
um just a pre-progression i guess we can
0:58:26
just do pre-provisioning and then
0:58:28
finish validation with you for sure
0:58:32
i'm thinking about this
0:58:33
same as well
0:58:38
whoa
0:58:39
see this
0:58:40
five times
0:58:41
[Laughter]
0:58:45
wow it's time for me to do all the
0:58:47
push-ups
0:58:48
come
0:58:55
that's how you treat your guests on your
0:58:57
show
0:58:58
yes
0:58:59
i guess
0:59:01
no no
0:59:02
i'll do them all for you guys i'll have
0:59:04
them all for you
0:59:09
see
0:59:10
all the cool guests
0:59:12
and
0:59:13
did the push-ups on the show
0:59:18
especially the second one
0:59:20
yeah
0:59:23
okay uh yeah i guess all right
0:59:27
all right
0:59:29
let's do that
0:59:31
i'm gonna stop my thing a bit
0:59:40
welcome back to lord carter's blog guys
0:59:47
you know this is going to get clipped so
0:59:49
better nice
0:59:59
[Music]
1:00:12
should be visible now
1:00:17
okay
1:00:20
then your account
1:00:26
then
1:00:32
three two one
1:00:35
one
1:00:36
two
1:00:38
three
1:00:39
four
1:00:41
five
1:00:42
okay yeah i think that was the deal
1:00:49
uh tori you look like you want to do
1:00:51
more
1:00:53
no way i'm spam that was the hardest
1:00:55
thing i did all day
1:01:00
apart from joining the stream with
1:01:03
the internet is pretty good though um
1:01:06
yeah i actually didn't feel any sort of
1:01:09
latency or oh good any sort of problems
1:01:13
with us
1:01:17
yes i guess um we will have you tomorrow
1:01:19
for sure but
1:01:21
thank you everyone for joining in and
1:01:22
thank you tori for the thank you
1:01:25
yeah thanks so much for having me
1:01:27
appreciate it it's a lot of fun
1:01:31
and also bring your water next time
1:01:34
i'll bring my water okay yes
1:01:37
water water
1:01:39
water
1:01:40
thanks guys
1:01:42
yeah for sure
1:01:43
um yeah um yes so i think we
1:01:46
did make some progress today when we
1:01:49
understood a lot of stuff relating to
1:01:51
environment variables even if you're not
1:01:52
going to use it
1:01:54
um at least we know how it works and at
1:01:56
least we know where they are
1:01:58
um tomorrow we're going to start working
1:02:00
on provisioning pre-progressing dynamodb
1:02:03
which
1:02:04
to my capacity still i think which means
1:02:07
that we're just gonna
1:02:08
specify a maximum amount that an
1:02:10
application can consume from that table
1:02:13
um
1:02:14
which means that the person who's doing
1:02:16
the for loop can not
1:02:18
will not be able to um consume a lot of
1:02:22
um table memory also then we can't hear
1:02:23
you if you're trying to speak
1:02:25
um
1:02:26
oh here we go yeah that works um
1:02:31
but yeah tomorrow come back and we're
1:02:33
gonna do a lot of aws stuff so don't
1:02:36
forget to wear your aws hoodies guys
1:02:39
if you have one and call that
1:02:41
and call this girl
1:02:44
yes to help us
1:02:47
um out
1:02:48
price for joining us and get definitely
1:02:50
send me the clip on slack i can't copy
1:02:52
the chat
1:02:53
yeah me too please
1:02:55
yes
1:02:56
uh right guys
1:02:58
thank you and uh everything has been
1:03:01
done by okay so i'll just uh
1:03:04
end it so if you
1:03:07
sorry if you want to join with k
1:03:10
and
1:03:11

1:03:13

1:03:31

1:03:42
